After the 12th of January 1858 the
registration of grants
of probate and letters of administration (Admons) was done by a central
probate registry. In 1875, registration became part of the
supreme
court. |

| Wills and Admons before 1858
Before 1858, there were two Prerogative Courts, one for the northern province of York (PCY) and another for the southern province of Canterbury (PCC). The PCY court covered the counties of Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland, Westmorland, Cumberland, Lancashire, Cheshire, Nottinghamshire and the Isle of Man. The remainder of England and all of Wales was in the PCC court. |

| Death duty registers 1796 - 1903
These taxes were generally known as
death or estate duties.
The tax was on personal estates over the value of £20.
Estates
worth over £100 became liable to succession duty from 1853.
You will need to have an approximate date of death. If found these documents may give a lot of information and some details that are not in the will. |
